2017 the year of the independent.
As an independent pub owner, I am delighted that the buzzword for 2017 is ‘INDEPENDENT’. Markets in so many industries, pubs especially, are saturated with big national brands that invariably beat smaller traders into a corner with pricing and investment. 2017 will see consumers seeking out independent retailers. Looking for a more passionate service, higher quality and greater variety.
Artisan producers have been with us for a while and long may they continue but too often it’s only the larger retailers who offer those artisan brands as it’s their only feasible route to market.
I have now been a publican for 15 years having had 4 quality food-led pubs – my wife, Laura, and I own the lease at The Hogget, an independent pub in Hook in Hampshire – serving great food in a relaxed and informal pub setting.
